Workshop Description: Language Register; it’s not what you say, it’s how you say it. Or is it both? As interpreters we make decisions every day about not just what words we are going to use, but also how we choose to use them. These choices can mean the difference between a successful professional interaction, or a social faux pas that leaves the interpreter wishing they had called in sick. In this workshop we will explore the contributing factors that determine language register. We will also look at the motivations behind register shifts and discuss strategies for interpreting in various registers.

    Educational Objectives:
By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:  Identify the 5 registers as outlined by Martin Joos, analyze statements and match them to the corresponding register, and analyze dialogue examples in English and ASL and identify the factors that determine register change.

Presenter Bio: Hello my name is Henry Yandrasits and I am an interpreter and linguist in the Milwaukee WI, area. I did my interpreter training at UW-Milwaukee and then went on to pursue a Masters degree at Gallaudet University. My primary areas of work right now are medical and mental health interpreting, but in a past life I worked as an English as second language (ESL) instructor for both Deaf and hearing adults. Language has always been a passion of mine and teaching others about language is one of my favorite ways to share my passion. When I’m not working I enjoy being outdoors; camping, backpacking, or just walking the dog. I enjoy cooking too, especially trying my hand at foods from other countries.

    Cost: Certified/Associate $30, Senior Citizen (55+) $20, Student (W/ID) $20, Non-Member $80

This professional studies program is offered for 0.3 CEUs.  ASL Communication is an Approved RID CMP Sponsor for continuing education activities. Participants need “some” prior knowledge of this topic. No partial CEUs will be offered. Target audience for this workshop is working interpreters and students.
